๐ŸŽ–๏ธ HONORABLE MENTIONS

Close, But Not Quite

These iron sets were genuinely excellent in 2025 โ€” they just didn't edge out our category winners. Here's exactly why, and who they might actually be the right pick for.

Mizuno JPX 923 Hot Metal

~$900/setAlmost: Most Forgiving
Check Price โ†’

The Mizuno JPX 923 Hot Metal is a standout game-improvement iron that delivers excellent ball speed and a surprisingly solid feel for the category. Mizuno's Chromoly 4140M face construction pushes distance while keeping that distinct Mizuno feel intact. It came very close to taking Most Forgiving, but the Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke HL's AI-optimized face is meaningfully more forgiving across the entire face on off-center strikes. For golfers who want game-improvement distance with a touch more Mizuno feel, the JPX 923 Hot Metal is a fantastic alternative.

Srixon ZX5 Mk II

~$950/setAlmost: Best for Mid Handicappers
Check Price โ†’

The Srixon ZX5 Mk II is an underrated mid-handicapper iron that deserves more attention than it gets. MainWave face technology and a seamless cup face construction deliver excellent ball speed and a clean, slightly compact look that better players appreciate. It nearly took the mid-handicapper spot from the Ping i530. The i530 edges it out on consistency and the refinement of Ping's manufacturing, but the ZX5 Mk II is a compelling iron for mid-handicappers who want to try something off the beaten path and may be pleasantly surprised.

Callaway Apex CB

~$1,200/setAlmost: Best Players Irons
Check Price โ†’

The Callaway Apex CB is a cavity-back players iron that bridges the gap between tour blades and more forgiving options โ€” a category Callaway has mastered. The forged body delivers excellent feel, the cavity back adds just enough forgiveness for better players who miss occasionally, and the look at address is tour-clean. It nearly took Best Players Irons, but the Titleist T100 wins on purity โ€” if you're shopping true players irons, feel, feedback, and workability are everything, and the T100 is slightly better in all three. The Apex CB is the right call for a low handicapper who wants a touch more forgiveness than a blade without giving up the look.
